Hey there,

A new PwC report analyzed over 1 billion job listings across 27 countries this week — and the finding isn't what you'd expect. The labor market hasn't tightened or loosened. It's split into two completely different tracks, and the gap between them is widening every month. Which track your target role lands on may matter more right now than any individual application.

Today: The PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer reveals which track is growing twice as fast, Oracle is cutting again, Barclays is testing employee loyalty with stricter RTO, and we have 5 remote-first companies actively hiring right now.

🔥 The Big Story This Week

PwC Analyzed 1 Billion Job Listings. The Labor Market Split in Two.

The headline. PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer drew on more than 1 billion job advertisements across 27 countries — and the finding is stark. AI isn't collapsing the labor market. It's dividing it into two tracks: "professionalised" roles, where human judgment directs AI, and "democratised" roles, where AI makes the work accessible to anyone. One track is growing twice as fast with 42% faster salary growth. The other is contracting.

The bigger picture. "Professionalised" entry-level roles grew 35% since 2019. Traditional entry-level roles shrank 10%. Companies in the top fifth of AI exposure grew their workforces 52% since 2018 — with 163% labor productivity growth. The companies and roles winning in AI aren't just automating. They're elevating human judgment to the top of the stack.

Why this matters: The two tracks aren't equally accessible. Getting on the professionalised track requires demonstrating AI direction skills — not just AI use. Job seekers who position around judgment, synthesis, and decision-making are moving onto the higher-growth track.

Job Market Quick Hits

Oracle's March 30,000-Person Cut Wasn't the End

Oracle eliminated 30,000 employees in March 2026 — the largest cut at any enterprise software company in decades. That wave continued through August and September, with additional teams facing double-digit reductions as Oracle funds its $50 billion AI capex commitment. The playbook is consistent: announce massive AI infrastructure spending, fund it by cutting operational headcount. The companies rebuilding around AI are cutting their way in, not growing their way out.

PayPal Has Cut 4,760 Employees Across Three Continents in 2026

PayPal's 2026 restructuring has been steady and undramatic — 4,760 employees cut in India, Ireland (12% of Irish staff), Israel, and 251 San Jose HQ roles taking effect October 30. The direction is identical to Oracle's: lean into AI infrastructure, eliminate the headcount it replaces. Fintech is not a safe harbor this cycle — what's happening to PayPal is happening across payment processing, digital commerce, and financial technology broadly.

Barclays Is Tightening Its RTO Policy — and Testing How Many Leave

Barclays is requiring managing directors into the office four days per week and all other UK employees three days, effective October 2026. The policy affects roughly half of its 45,000 UK workforce, including operations and technology roles. The bank's employee union has raised concerns. In financial services, RTO is no longer a threat — it's policy. The real variable now is attrition, and every bank testing it will find out exactly what flexibility was worth.

Volkswagen Approved the Biggest Overhaul in Its 89-Year History

Volkswagen's supervisory board unanimously approved cutting 50,000 additional jobs — bringing the total planned reduction to 100,000 positions. VW will also eliminate half its vehicle lineup and cut product complexity by 75%. The drivers: U.S. tariffs, slowing China demand, and Chinese EV competition on price. VW shares rose after the announcement. For anyone in automotive, manufacturing, or global operations — this is the signal: no legacy sector is insulated from AI-accelerated cost restructuring.

🏢 Companies Hiring Right Now

The week was heavy on cuts. Here's the other side — five companies with genuine remote-first track records still building teams in September 2026.

Zapier — Fully Remote Since Day One, 800+ Employees Across 40+ Countries

Zapier builds workflow automation tools and has never had an office. Open roles span engineering, support, marketing, and operations across 40+ countries. No headquarters pressure, no relocation requirements — this is what true remote looks like.

HubSpot — @Flex Policy, Remote-Eligible in Sales, Marketing, and Engineering

HubSpot lets employees choose office, hybrid, or fully remote — and remote hires get the same career advancement. Current openings span sales, marketing, engineering, customer success, and operations globally.

Atlassian — Team Anywhere, Hiring in Engineering, Product, and Customer Success

Atlassian pioneered "Team Anywhere" — work from home, in an office, or anywhere, permanently. Open roles in product, engineering, customer success, design, and go-to-market. One of the largest tech companies with a genuine distributed-first model.

Automattic — Distributed Since Day One, Same Pay Regardless of Location

Automattic — behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce — has operated as a distributed organization since founding. Same salary in Boise as in San Francisco. Open roles in engineering, content, support, and product.

Notion — 66% of Openings Remote-Eligible, Hiring in Engineering and Product

Notion is actively hiring in September 2026, with two-thirds of current openings remote-eligible. Positions available in engineering, product, security, and operations.

🎯 Career Signal Of The Week

30% of Job Seekers Are Teaching Themselves AI Skills. Their Employers Aren't.

The iCIMS September 2026 Workforce Report — released September 10, drawing on data from 3.1 million users and 691 million candidate profiles — found that 47% of job seekers actively built AI skills in the past six months, up from 41% a year ago. The share teaching themselves rose from 22% to 30% in one year. Meanwhile, employer-provided training held flat at roughly one in six workers.

The implication is sharp: 42% of job seekers say a company offering AI training would be more attractive than a comparable employer that doesn't — and 14% would accept lower pay for it. Employers are adding AI requirements to postings faster than they're investing in the people to meet them. Workers bridging that gap on their own are building a compounding advantage. The ones waiting to be trained are falling behind, one month at a time.

Quick Win For Job Seekers

Before you apply, check if the company has a learning budget, AI training, or professional development fund.

Remote-first companies that invest in upskilling signal something specific: they trust employees to grow without supervision and want to keep them competitive. If a company requires AI skills in the posting but has nothing about training in benefits, that mismatch is worth noting — it usually means they expect you to arrive fully formed with no support. Check the engineering blog too — consistent, substantive writing there usually signals a team that values and rewards skill development. Spend five minutes on this before every application.

🎯 Bottom Line This Week

The PwC report this week put a billion-job data set behind something most job seekers have been sensing: the market has split. The "professionalised" half — where human judgment directs AI rather than being replaced by it — is growing faster, paying better, and building entry-level positions at a 35% clip. The other track is contracting.

Oracle continued cutting through September to fund its $50B AI bet. PayPal's restructuring is now global — 4,760 employees across three continents. Volkswagen just approved 100,000 total job cuts — the largest restructuring in its 89-year history. And Barclays is about to find out exactly how much flexibility is worth to its workforce.

The companies still actively building remote teams — Zapier, HubSpot, Atlassian, Automattic, Notion — are hiring for precisely the work on the professionalised track. Find verified remote roles at RemoteHunter.com.
