Hey there,

Even the companies whose job is to protect you from cyber threats aren't immune to the AI restructuring wave. Rapid7 cut 310 roles this week under a new CEO — and the playbook is the same one we've seen at Oracle, Salesforce, and Meta. The pattern is clear enough now that you should know it by name.

Today: The Rapid7 AI pivot and what it means for tech workers, four market moves from Alphabet to federal telework, and five remote-first companies that are actively building teams right now.

🔥 The Big Story This Week

Rapid7's New CEO Eliminated 12% of the Company. The AI-First Playbook Is Now Industry-Agnostic.

The headline. On August 7, Rapid7's board approved a restructuring plan under new CEO Wael Mohamed — announced alongside Q2 earnings — eliminating 310 roles, or 12% of the company's 2,600-person workforce. The cuts fund a shift to an AI-first cybersecurity platform. Rapid7 brought in $860M in revenue last year but is forecasting 2026 sales as low as $837M as customers delay migrating to its newer offerings.

The bigger picture. This is the same three-step sequence we've seen across enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, and CRM: new CEO inherits aging product lines + restructures immediately to fund AI transition. What makes Rapid7 notable is the sector — cybersecurity is supposed to be a growth category. Even there, the AI pivot overrides the sector tailwind.

Why this matters: CEO change + AI-first pivot + headcount reduction is a predictable sequence now. If your company is going through a leadership transition, know which product lines are being invested in — and target those roles, not the ones being sunsetted.

66%

Of U.S. employers plan to increase permanent hiring in H2 2026 — up from 57% a year ago. Tech (78%), healthcare (75%), and finance (74%) lead demand. (Robert Half, July 29, 2026)

Job Market Quick Hits

Alphabet Is Cutting 1,500–3,000 Jobs While Routing $175B to AI

Google's parent is executing a rolling round of separations across advertising sales, cloud operations, and HR — totaling 1,500–3,000+ roles in 2026 per WARN filings. Meanwhile, Alphabet is redirecting $175–185 billion toward AI data centers this year. The roles going are operational and generalist. The roles growing are AI engineering and infrastructure. If you're in a generalist tech role, the clock is ticking on whether you specialize.

Walmart's "Next-Gen Workplace" Is Being Emptied 15 Months After Opening

Walmart opened its Crossman Avenue campus in Sunnyvale in April 2025 — a "next-generation workplace" built for ~2,000 staff. On August 21, 412 Bay Area tech workers across three Sunnyvale locations and a San Bruno facility are being permanently laid off. That's the third Global Tech wave in 13 months. Even brand-new campuses aren't insulation against AI-driven reorganization.

The Federal Government Just Made "Almost No Remote Work" Its Official Policy

OPM now requires federal workers to be full-time, in-person, with telework used "sparingly." A new Executive Order codifies the 5-days-a-week in-office mandate. Several agencies that ignored this — including HHS and HUD — were ordered by arbitrators to reinstate telework for union employees. For private-sector job seekers: the country's largest employer just sent a loud signal that some companies will follow. Verifying a company's actual remote policy before you accept an offer matters more than ever.

58% of Hiring Managers Say Qualified Talent Is Harder to Find Than Last Year

Here's the buried counter-signal: Robert Half's survey of 2,000+ hiring managers shows that even as 66% plan to increase hiring, nearly 6 in 10 can't find the candidates they need. Sixty-three percent have delayed major projects. Forty-eight percent have canceled projects entirely due to skills gaps. The market isn't slow — it's specialized. If your skills match what employers can't find, your leverage is real right now.

🎯 Career Signal Of The Week

The Two-Track Labor Market Is Real — And the Gap Is Widening at 42% a Year

PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer analyzed over a billion job ads across six continents and found the labor market is splitting into two distinct tracks. "Professionalised" roles — those requiring judgment, leadership, creativity, and AI collaboration — are seeing twice the job growth and 42% faster salary growth than "democratised" roles made more routine by AI tools. The wage premium for AI-capable workers reached 34.2% in 2025.

The roles growing fastest don't just require knowing how to use AI — they require the human judgment to use it well. The investment that pays the most right now is building domain expertise alongside AI fluency, not one or the other. Read the full signal →

Quick Win For Job Seekers

Before you apply anywhere, run a 2-minute company health check.

Google the company name + "layoffs 2026" and then the company name + "WARN notice" before you apply or accept an interview. WARN filings are public record and are typically filed 60 days before an effective layoff date — meaning the information is there long before it shows up in news. Knowing a company is mid-restructuring doesn't mean you shouldn't pursue it, but it tells you which questions to ask and which roles are actually stable. Spend 2 minutes on this before your next application. See the full tip →

🎯 Bottom Line This Week

Every sector is running the same AI-first restructuring calculation now — including cybersecurity, which you'd expect to be hiring freely. Rapid7 cut 310 roles under a new CEO. Alphabet is cutting 1,500–3,000 while routing $175B to AI. Walmart's brand-new Sunnyvale campus is being emptied 15 months after it opened.

The workers on the right side of this split are building domain expertise alongside AI fluency — and PwC's data shows a 34.2% wage premium for workers who've made that bet. The market is bifurcated, not broken. Companies like HubSpot, Dropbox, Deel, Canva, and Twilio are hiring right now for exactly these specialized roles.
